If you are stepping into a home and only now making plans on what you will do with it, there is every need to pay special attention to the kitchen. Getting a designer kitchen is so much more than just contacting a company. They need to go over certain steps, in order to ensure that the end result matches your expectations and needs.

So, when you are ready to head out to the designer, you will do well to consider the steps to designing the perfect kitchen. Here is what the process involves.

Step 1 – Choose kitchen cabinets

Some people like to first consider the function and the outline of the kitchen, but there is no denying that figuring out what kitchen cabinets you want is also an essential consideration. It will help you big time if you plan your kitchen cabinets in advance. There are many manufacturers out there, who can get you custom-sized cabinetry, but it is important to be forward planning in this regard, as it can take time to make these to match the realities of the place and to meet your needs.

Step 2 – Creating a floor/wall plan

Next up, you want to create a plan of the space – the floor and wall areas. It is a good idea to take a lead on what measurements your cabinet manufacturer is using and stick to that in the plan. If you have the experience, you can draw up the plan on your own, or approach the manufacturer for this very important task. At this point you can make easy changes, so don’t be afraid to experiment.

Step 3 – Plan the outline

There are various kitchen styles out there, most popular being U-shaped, L-shaped, galley kitchens and kitchens with islands. Depending on the size of the place and your lifestyle, you want to pick a kitchen outline that best serves you.

Step 4 – Location of the appliances and fixtures

There is a modern design principle that all kitchen designers follow: the kitchen triangle. Basically, it involves the sink, oven and fridge areas of the room. Access to these 3 points should be easy and there should be enough space there to support work in the kitchen. Based on that, you should make an outline of where you want other appliances and fixtures to be.

Kitchen AppliancesStep 5 – Storage

Storage capacity is very important to every kitchen out there. In order to accommodate all of your kitchen items, you need adequate storage solutions. Consider what solutions you want to use, such as cabinet organisers, corner drawers, etc. It is important to be realistic about your needs on this one, as you don’t want to end up with insufficient storage.

Step 6 – Lightning

Consider what kind of lighting you need for the kitchen. Task lighting, under-cabinet lights, LED lights, hanging lights … there sure are a lot of solutions for kitchen lighting out there. The important thing to remember is to keep the place well illuminated, while at the same time you match the overall design.

Step 7 – Electrical points

One mistake people often make is to forget about the electrical points in their home. You don’t want to end up with zero options to plug in a blender or a coffee machine, do you? It is important to plan out where you want electrical points before the design process starts, so as not to have to make very expensive adjustments later.

By following all of these steps, a kitchen designer can really make the best solution for your kitchen.
